1960's POLITICS

The Kennedy's:

The Kennedy's were one of the most watched families of the era. People idolized them and dubbed their kingdom "Camelot". Throughout the late 50's-early 60's John F. Kennedy's presidency had a huge impact on the world, and today's world.

President Kennedy dealt with many difficulties during his presidency such as the Bay of Pigs and Korean War. But throughout the Cold War there was no greater conflict for the president than the Cuban Missile Crisis. During this time we were at brinkmanship with the USSR. If the president hadn't made the decisions he did, there is no telling what would have become of the USA. It is very likely we would have either been completely destroyed as a whole or forced under Soviet control. This event had, in my opinion, the biggest impact on today's world.

However, Camelot came to an abrupt end when the king of the castle was assassinated. Lee Harvey Oswald killed President Kennedy during his re-election campaign in Dallas,TX. The whole country mourned for the loss of a truly great leader.

Lyndon B. Johnson:

President Johnson took over for the remainder of the presidency. He followed Kennedy's agenda by instituting health care programs such as medicare and medicaid. He also had a plan for a "great society" and started many educational programs such as Sesame Street. Today, we still have the medicare program and almost every kid has grown up watching Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street.
